Sharon Engel Biography

Light is the heart of Sharon's paintings. The warm sunlight creates an atmosphere in which the viewer may feel pleasure, wanting to participate in the scene. Engel paints on location in the impressionistic tradition using oil, acrylic or watercolor. Painting done on location gives her the essence of place, light and feeling. Traveling throughout Europe and the U.S. gives her the chance to paint an endless array of subjects and atmospheres, inviting the viewer to enjoy the world as she does. Each year brings new subjects and excitement to her painting, juxtaposing beautiful color to create life's intimate moments and record lasting inspirations in her life. Her gardens, grandchildren, and family are constant companions and inspirations, constantly redefining the newness of every day. The subjects of her art are her own lifetime and her own experiences: the sun casting shadows in her mountain garden, afternoon light playing behind the hollyhocks and poppies as it moves over the sea in her beach garden, a sunset at a café in Paris. For her, art is finding a way to express her emotions and dialog with the viewer.

Sharon Engel Statement

I am  fascinated with the idea of constant discovery when I go out in the field to paint. The beauty,

the light and of course color are never the same; always changing, always a challenge to capture.

My love of gardens, flowers, landscape has always been a wonder to me; peaceful and satisfying to paint. When we moved to Sunriver 28 years ago a whole new challenge began. I had done plein aire painting all over the Willamette Valley and Oregon and taught others to do it for 18 years. We have traveled to many places in the world and I’ve returned to some again & again. Giverny & Monet’s Gardens 6 times. The village and gardens are always different in every season. Italy to France, a never ending scene. DuBai to Istanbul; Egypt to Barcelona. Our beautiful mountains of  Oregon. When you paint on location you don’t just paint a scene. You see, smell, hear everything around and over it. It all connects to give me that “wow” moment. I’ve been sunburned, bug bit, scraped up from hiking back country, desert and canyons. On ships, bicycles, trains and wild taxi rides. Where I go my paint box goes too. Now, after 40 years of painting professionally, my paintings are a travel log of my life. I still get that charge of excitement and anticipation every time I set up my paint box! Hope you enjoy traveling my world with me.
